Recent acquisitions by the State Library of Queensland, Part 2

 

I’ve long been attracted to the accessible, inclusive, collectable and affordable nature of zines. I have a small collection of my own and have also been making them for numerous years, a pleasurable and satisfying activity I’ve lately begun to question, as it has become increasingly difficult to find outlets for them. Aside from that, I may possibly be the oldest zinester in the world, and with recent directional changes in my work, wondered if the time had come to move on. 

Then, out of the blue, I received an email from the State Library of Queensland expressing interest in acquiring one of my artist books and a selection of Moth Woman Press zines.

With the exception of Card Sharps, another copy of which is already in the collection, a duplicate set of zines has been acquired for the State Library of Queensland’s Education Kit for use during school visits.

Moth Woman Press publications are also held in the permanent collections of the State Library of Victoria, National Library of Australia, ACT, National Gallery of Australia, ACT, Melbourne Atheneaum Library and other public institutions.

MWP Zines in Artist Books & Folios

As promised, here is an overview of the MWP zines included in the upcoming exhibition Artist Books & Folios at Stephen McLaughlan Gallery. Click on images to enlarge.

The Republic of Mothstralia Stamps - Socialist Butterfly Party zine (pictured below) is the second of two zines made especially for the exhibition. (The other is Roundels, top right above). To get the skinny on the Socialist Butterfly Party, visit Deborah Klein’s Art Blog HERE.

Only 10 copies of each zine will be available during the run of the exhibition, so (as they used to say in the ads), get in fast while stocks last. I do plan on replenishing numbers, but won’t have time until my return from London in the latter part of October. I’m sad to be missing the entire exhibition, but very excited to see my friends in the UK and sampling the plethora of cultural treats that will be on offer while I’m there.

This Sunday: BMI Christmas Maker Market

A selection of Moth Woman Press limited edition mini-zines, all packed up and ready for the BMI Christmas Maker Market on Sunday, 18 December, 9 am - 2 pm at BMI, Ballarat. If, like me, you’re a last minute Christmas shopper, they make excellent stocking fillers. (Click  on images to enlarge). 

This year BMI are aiming to create a more immersive experience for visitors by placing stallholders in a variety of locations throughout the building. Come on down - or in our case, up. You’ll find us on the 4th floor in the Humffray Room. 

BMI Christmas Maker and Community Market

Moth Woman Press are excited to be first time participants in the BMI Maker and Community Market at Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute Library on Sunday, December 18, 9 am - 2 pm.

Stocking up at Playing in the Attic

Yesterday’s visit to Playing in the Attic to replenish supplies of Moth Woman Press books, postcards and limited edition zines found the shop looking particularly resplendent. 

It’s encouraging to know that after all these years, folk are still collecting our little zines (arrayed on Trudy’s counter in the top pic).

APW George Collie Exhibition Extended to 15 October

Yesterday I received some terrific news. The APW George Collie Exhibition at Australian Print Workshop Gallery, Melbourne, originally scheduled to end on 1 October, has been extended to 15 October. The exhibition is accompanied by a goodly selection of Moth Woman Press artist books and zines.

A visit to APW with Sue Verney

Last Thursday Shane Jones and I took our friend Sue Verney to the Australian Print Workshop Gallery to see the APW George Collie Memorial Print Award Exhibition, which includes several of my linocuts. 

Sue, who was visiting from London, is one of my oldest friends. She has been enormously supportive of my artistic endeavours since I shared a flat with her in Holland Park, London, way back in the 1970s. That’s Sue and I outside the APW directly above and she can also be seen scrutinising MWP zines and books in the front window of the APW in the following photo.

 

Numerous Moth Woman Press publications are also on view inside the gallery and many are available for purchase. 

The displays have been slightly rearranged since our last post, but are equally elegant.

The APW George Collie Memorial Print Award Exhibition continues to 1 October.

Moth Woman Press at the APW 2020-2022 George Collie Memorial Award

 

Pictured above and below are some highlights from last Saturday’s 2020-22 APW George Collie Award Exhibition + Presentation at The Australian Print Workshop. My heartfelt thanks to APW Artistic Director and CEO, Anne Virgo (pictured below, right) for her support and encouragement over the past two years. 

It was Anne’s idea to include Moth Woman Press books and zines in the exhibition. A selection of these are displayed in the APW’s front window and the remainder are on display in the gallery space. Click on images for enlarged views.
