SELF-MADE: ZINES AND ARTIST BOOKS

The exhibition, which runs until 12 November, will travel to a number of regional and interstate galleries in 2018 and 2019. 

Curated by Monica Syrette and developed in partnership with Sticky Institute, SELF-MADE  displays rarely seen material from the Library’s extensive collection of artist books and zines, the largest in Australia.

MOTH by Matthew Gandy

It would be very remiss of Moth Woman Press to overlook (Inter)National Moth Week, which begins today. In celebration of this auspicious event, we are showcasing a significant and timely publication: Moth, by Matthew Gandy, Professor of Geography at the University of Cambridge. This recently published book includes an image of my painting Argina astrea Moth Mask, 2007 (below, centre).

It is published by Reaktion Books Ltd, UK and distributed in the US through the University of Chicago Press. The book is available through numerous outlets, including Dymocks, Booktopia and Amazon. 

Moth is superbly written and richly illustrated. Needless to add, I’m extremely proud to be a small part of it. For additional page views and further information, visit Deborah Klein's Art Blog.

Preview: 'Moth Women Vigilantes ROGUES GALLERY', a new mini-zine

Tomorrow morning, July 7, I'll be flying to Sydney for the Australian launch of Winsor and Newton’s Pigment Markers at Jasco.

To coincide with the event, I’ve made a mini-zine, Moth Women Vigilantes ROGUES GALLERY, illustrated with eight drawings made with W&N Pigment Markers. (See also previous post).  

Meanwhile, especially for followers of Moth Woman Press, here is an exclusive preview of the mini-zine.

Late last year I was invited by Michelle Sheehy, Winsor and Newton's Brand and Communications Manager, and Natalie O'Connor, their Resident Artist, to be a Winsor and Newton Global Ambassador. I was delighted to accept.

Over the past several months, I've been trying Winsor and Newton's archival Pigment Markers. The latest results (which, I might add, are unreservedly positive) have just been posted on my Art Blog.

For my latest Pigment Marker project, I made eight miniature drawings based on significant female screen actors. Time, which can be so fickle, has dimmed our memories of many of these women. I’ve sought to rectify this by reinventing them as Moth Women Vigilantes. As the series unfolded, I recognized its potential for extension into a mini-zine, and have done just that.

Pictured above are two Pigment Marker drawings from the series, with the markers providing a sense of their scale.

Immediately below are selected progress views of the mini-zine, Moth Women Vigilantes Rogues Gallery. It will be unveiled at the official Australian launch of the W&N Pigment Markers at Jasco’s Sydney headquarters on July 7.

A Zine for Eventide

On the cutting board this week: The Story of the Moth Masks, a brand new mini-zine destined for Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery. Created to coincide with the group exhibition, Eventide, the zine will be available in the gallery shop throughout the show's run. Gracing its front cover is Cossodes lyonetii Moth Woman, the linocut I made for the show. The mini-zine is a signed, limited edition of 100.

The title story made its debut in 2009 in There was once… the collected fairy tales, Moth Woman Press’s very first publication. There was once… will also be stocked by MPRG until Eventide draws to a close.

Eventide was curated by Rona Green and celebrates the art of the relief print. The exhibition is part of the Print Council of Australia's Year of Print. 

Exhibition dates: 13 May-3 July.

Moth Women mini-zines redux

With the exhibition Modern Myth off to a flying start (see last post) and the Sticky Institute Zine Fair (FOTP2016) less than a week away, it's back to the cutting board for me. Pictured below: topping up the edition of mini-zine Moth Women 1.

Also on the cutting board, proving (hopefully) that sequels can sometimes work: Moth Women 2, followed by Moth Women 3, the third of the trio.

All zines date from 2014 but are set to make a comeback at the 2016 Sticky Institute Festival of the Photocopier Zine Fair, Melbourne Town Hall, next Sunday, 14 February, from 12 - 5 pm. (Click on images to enlarge).

A mini-zine in the making: 2015 Mothstralian Postage Stamps

With the dust barely settled on this year's National Moth Week, the commemorative publication previewed in our previous post is well under way. Full details of the mini-zine Mothstralian Postage Stamps 2015, a signed and numbered limited edition of 100, will be posted soon.

National Moth Week - A commemorative mini-zine

To mark the occasion of this year's National Moth Week, which runs from 18-26 July, we have produced a set of eight stamps, which we are currently incorporating into a new mini-zine. Like other recent MWP zines, it is made with iPad apps (see also previous post). In this instance, I've employed the apps Square Ready, Pic Collage, Face On Stamps and Strip Designer in combination with selected works from my own Moth Masks series of paintings and drawings. The stamp sets can be viewed on my Art Blog, along with some revelatory information about the Moth Women themselves.

New Mini-Zines Part 3: Moth Women 2

Following closely on the heels of our previous post is Moth Women 2 - A mini-zine, the second in a set of three. Like its two sister zines, this modest publication (pictured below with selected page views) will be launched at the opening of my solo exhibition Homo-insecta at the Art Vault in Mildura on 26 November.

New Mini-Zines Part 2: Moth Women

The second zine made for Homo-insecta, my solo show at the Art Vault (see previous post) is the first of three Moth Women mini-zines. The images were sourced from the Moth Masks series of paintings and drawings I made between 2007 and 2010. The mythical Moth Women were not only the subject of one of my first fairy tales, they were also forerunners of the infamous Moth Women Vigilantes.

Directly below is a preview of the work, including cover art and selected page views. Directly following it is your very own invitation to the exhibition, which opens at 6 - 7 pm on Wednesday 26 November.
