Homo-insecta fly to Spain

In a year that’s currently dominated by moving house, if only from Melbourne to Ballarat, five Moth Woman Press zines are travelling somewhat farther afield. A full set of Homo-insecta mini-zines (Volumes 1 - 5) is heading for Vitoria-Gasteiz, the seat of government and capital city of the Basque Country in northern Spain.

Homo-insecta: An unnatural history portfolio

The unbound artist book Homo-insecta: An unnatural history portfolio (2013, hand coloured linocuts with text, ed: 10) was originally created for the group show Wonder Room, a contemporary take on the Wunderkammer, at Maroondah Art Gallery back in 2013

From 30 June - 7 July the book will be exhibited at Melbourne Athenaeum Library during my residency for Melbourne Rare Book Week.

It's no coincidence that the re-emergence of Homo-insecta: An unnatural history portfolio corresponds with the bicentenary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. This significant anniversary is commemorated on a grand scale in My Monster at RMIT Gallery (29 June - 18 August). Three of my 'unnatural history' watercolours are part of that show. A plethora of rare Homo-insecta specimens can also be viewed in PATTERNS OF COLLECTING: From the Bower at The Johnston Collection, current until 18 September.

I’ll be setting up the exhibition at Melbourne Athenaeum Library next Friday, 29 June. My residency commences the following day, Saturday, 30 June and concludes on Saturday, July 7. If you're planning to sample some of the many delights of Melbourne Rare Book Week, do drop in and say hello.

Zines for the State Library of Victoria

What do you the day after the Festival of the Photocopier zine fair when you're all tuckered and zined-out (but in a good way)? Why, make up more zines, of course. These mini-zines, Homo-insecta and its sequel, Homo-insecta 2, are two of several Moth Woman Press publications destined for the permanent collection of the State Library of Victoria.

Pictured below is another mini-zine for the State Library of Victoria: Mae West - Moth Woman Vigilante (2013). This one was something of an experiment; it was made primarily with iPad apps Strip Design and Half-Tone 2. The garish primary colours, halftone dots, faux creases and price (the zine is actually $4) imitate a vintage comic book imitating a 1930s women's magazine. 

I've always loved Mae West, a sassy, larger than life, multi-gifted actor/writer/performer decades ahead of her time. No stranger to controversy herself, she is an entirely worthy Honorary Member of the infamous Moth Women Vigilantes.

Moth Woman Press stocktake

Directly after my last post, when I announced the participation of Moth Woman Press in the 2016 Sticky Institute Festival of the Photocopier Zine Fair (FOTP) at Melbourne Town Hall, I did a major stocktake in the Ballarat studio. Primarily, I needed to know how many zine editions needed topping up before the big day on Sunday February 14. (This is currently being attended to).

At the back of my mind, I must admit, was also the concern that I wouldn't have enough work. Fortunately, the above mentioned exercise soon put my mind at rest.

As previously reported, work is also under way on three new mini-zines, A New Leaf and Homo-insecta 4 and 5, which will make their respective debuts at the zine fair.

Between the Sheets: Installation Views

Between the Sheets, the international artist books exhibition that includes my unbound book, Homo-insecta, an Unnatural History Portfolio, opened on March 7. Between The Sheets: Artists' Books 2015

The winged creatures in our unbound artist book, Homo-insecta are about to touch down in Perth, Western Australia. The book is part of Between the Sheets: Artists’ Books 2015, which features the work of 53 international and Australian book artists. Presented by Gallery East in conjunction with Gallery Central, the exhibition is held in parallel with the 7th International Artists Books exhibition in Vilnius, Lithuania.
